TVLine reports that Stephen Tobolowsky has been written out of the FOX freshman comedy THE MINDY PROJECT. The actor portrayed Dr. Shulman, the head of the OB-GYN practice where Kaling's character works.
“The decision was theirs,” Tobolowsky shared with HitFix.com. “I suspect I was a casualty of a show meeting many different demands from different sources,” adding that the Mindy Project team is “very talented” and “I certainly hope I didn’t stink up the joint.”
According to the site, the show's EP Matt Warburton explained that the character's departure was done to enable Mindy to, "encounter more challenges in the practice without having the avuncular Dr. Schulman around as a safety net."
In other casting news for the sitcom, TVLine reports that B.J. Novak will reunite with his 'Office' co-star Kaling on an upcoming story arc of the show. According to the report, the actor will portray 'Jamie' described as, "a Latin professor who bonds with our leading lady over the dying language." Eva Amurri (Californication) will also appear in upcoming episodes as a friend of the scholar.
