CBS' Steve Hartman Goes in Search of Kindness on Tonight's CBS EVENING NEWS

CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman goes "On the Road" to discover how small acts of kindness built an avalanche of handcrafted "snow." The report will be broadcast tonight, Jan. 11 on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

In tonight's report, Hartman travels to Hamden, Conn., where the state Parent Teacher Association has "snow" piled high in its office as a sign of support for Newtown, Conn., the site of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The boxes contain homemade snowflakes sent to the PTA from around the world.

"Literally an avalanche of snow," said Jim Accomando, the organization's president. "We're buried in mail."

The Connecticut Parent Teacher's Association last month requested that fellow PTA members from across the country send "snowflakes for Sandy Hook" to create a "winter wonderland" at the renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School. Today, the PTA lobby is stuffed floor to ceiling with boxes from around the United States and more than 50 countries. The snowflakes were crafted mostly by children who poured their hearts into the project.

And the boxes keep arriving.

"We'll be here until the last piece of mail is opened," Accomando said.
