Dublin-Based Studio to Adapt Irish Version of CHEERS

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dublin-based Sideline Productions has struck a deal with CBS to adapt and re-create an Irish version of the American hit show CHEERS.

Sideline has enlisted Micheal O'Meallaigh to adapt and direct the Irish reworking. As of now, the show is tentatively entitled TEACH SEAN (Sam Malone's name will be changed to Sean). Casting, re-writes, and translations of the American scripts is set to begin in early 2013.

Creative director at Sideline, Billy McGrath, told The Hollywood Reporter they plan to primarily focus on the first two seasons of CHEERS, "with a view of re-writing and re-versioning 10 to 12 episodes set in a picturesque town in the West of Ireland."

McGrath confirmed that he's aiming to begin shooting in 2013 in order to broadcast in Jan. 2014.

CHEERS ran for 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993 on NBC. Produced by Charles/Burrows/Charles Productions, in association with Paramount Network Television for NBC, the hit show was created by the team of James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles. The show is set in the Cheers bar in Boston, Massachusetts, where a group of locals meet to drink, relax, chat and get on with life. The show's theme song, written and performed by Gary Portnoy lent its famous refrain, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name", as the show's now infamous tagline.

The original series starred Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Nicholas Colasanto, Rhea Perlman, George Wendy, John Ratzenberger, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, and Kirstie Alley.
