HBO Cancels ENLIGHTENED

After two low-rated seasons, HBO is no longer feeling ENLIGHTENED.

The network has opted out of renewing the series for a third season, despite the fact that its star, Laura Dern, won a Golden Globe for her performance during its inaugural outing.

The second season premiered to just 300,000 viewers earlier this year, tapering off throughout its subsequent episodes. Its finale, which aired on March 3, drew in just 220,000 viewers.

"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement. "We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

Enlightened featured Dern as Amy in the series, which she co-created and executive produces along with Mike White ("Year of the Dog"), who also co-starred, wrote and directed. Scott Stephens also served as an executive producer.

In season two, Amy redoubled her effort to gather evidence against Abaddonn with the support of Tyler (White), her meek IT ally, and enlisted journalist Jeff Flender in her cause. Meanwhile, Amy's ex, Levi, continued to struggle with rehab.

Luke Wilson, Diane Ladd, Timm Sharp, Bayne Gibby and Jason Mantzoukas also starred.
