AMERICAN IDOL's Nigel Lythgoe & MGM TV to Develop Scripted Television Reboot of FAME

Variety reports that MGM TV has partnered with "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to develop a new scripted series based on the musical FAME. According to the report, the project will be executive produced by Lythgoe along with Kary McHoul, president of Nigel Lythgoe Productions (NLP), Charles Segars and Chad Gutstein.

Commented Roma Khanna, president of TV digital at MGM, "We are excited to work with Nigel, Charles and the team to identify a talented writer to create the new 'Fame,' one that reflects the struggles and joys unique to the multitude of aspiring talent today."

FAME was a 1980 film which chronicled the lives of several teenagers attending a prestigious New York high school for students gifted in the performing arts. The film was adapted to TV beginning in 1982 and ran for six years. 

In 1988, a stage adaptation opened on Broadway starring Gavin Creel. Set in New York City's legendary High School for Performing Arts, the show took audiences through the highs, the lows, the romances and the ultimate triumphs of the star-struck pupils in their quest for success.
