TVGuide reports that more original music and lyrics from the award-winning team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is on the way for the upcoming second season of NBC's SMASH. The site confirms that the duo has "composed tunes for other faux Broadway shows that will compete with Bombshell for ticket sales as the Marilyn Monroe-themed production nears its premiere." The musical drama series recently received a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Comedy/Musical category.
Marc Shaiman also shared plot line details for some of the big-name guest stars who will appear in the show's second season. In one episode, Christian Borle's 'Tom' tries to make up for forgetting a friend's birthday. He "surprises the character by having Liza Minnelli sing a song he wrote," explains Shaiman.
'Promises Promises' star Sean Hayes will portray a "John Malkovich role" in a musical version of Dangerous Liaisons. Shaiman reveals that he will perform the song, "It's Not My Fault," in which "he gets to flirt with all these big-busted women and go completely insane." Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson will portray Tony winner Veronica Moore, the lead in 'Beautiful' described as "a 1960s-set, Hairspray-esque musical."
The second season of SMASH will begin with a Two-hour Season Premiere on Tuesday, February 5 (9-11 p.m. ET) on the NBC network.
