CBSSports.com reports that twenty-six students from Newtown, Conn.'s Sandy Hook Elementary School will perform the song 'America the Beautiful' during the pre-game show of Super Bowl XLVII. Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL, confirmed the news yesterday to USA Today. The performance will air live and will occur just prior to Alicia Keys singing of the National Anthem.
The choir will perform in memory of the 26 students and faculty who were tragically gunned down on December 14th in what has become the second deadliest school shooting in American history.
The NFL has been a source of strength to the town of Newton. Each team held a moment of silence before the games which immediately followed the tragedy. The athletes also donned "S.H.E.S" decals on their helmets to show their support for the Connecticut community. In addition, NFL players, such as Giants' Victor Cruz, reached out personally to the families who lost loved ones. Cruz met with the family of 6-year-old victim Jack Pinto, who was buried in Cruz's No. 80 jersey. The Sandy Hook choir recently performed 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' with Grammy-nominated singer Ingrid Michaelson on the one-month anniversary of the shooting.
