Contributor Faith Salie reports on a group of U.S. Army war veterans who are sharing their stories in an effort to bridge the gap between those who have served in the armed forces and civilians on this weekend's CBS SUNDAY MORNING WITH Charles Osgood to be broadcast today, March 17, 2013 (9:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.
Salie talks to soldiers who recently participated in a night of "War Stories and Free Beer," an event that features a group of veterans telling stories of combat to veterans and non-veterans alike over rounds of beer. "War Stories and Free Beer" is the idea of Army Special Forces Staff Sergeant Jason McCarthy, who in 2009 realized there was a need to open a dialogue between veterans and civilians.
"I think it's a shame when we're asking World War II veterans to tell their stories when they're in their 80s or their 90s," McCarthy tells Salie. "And the goal with 'War Stories and Free Beer' was basically to say, look, these stories exist now. And we can impact society for the better sooner. We can capture the stories now and people can start to understand more now."
McCarthy says that while public support for the military is strong, too few people actually know someone in the service personally. He thinks sharing the stories will help returning veterans assimilate back into society.
"They're just people," McCarthy tells Sallie. "They do extraordinary things but they're approachable and you can talk to them, you can ask them questions. It doesn't have to be the elephant in the room that somebody served in the military. And I would put that on my generation who went to war as well to say don't make it the elephant in the room. Talk about it. People want to hear you. Trust me, and everybody wins when you do that."
Salie's report on "War Stories and Free Beer" will be broadcast today, March 17, 2013 on CBS SUNDAY MORNING on the CBS Television Network. Rand Morrison is the executive producer.
