On the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) said the act needs updating, in an interview broadcast live today, June 10, 2013 on CBS THIS MORNING (7:00-9:00 AM) on the CBS Television Network. Watch the appearance in full below!

"It's not only about women, but about the middle class," Gillibrand told co-hosts Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell.

"If you're not paying a woman the same as a man, you're not tapping into the potential of our economy," Gillibrand said. "And why wouldn't you tap the full potential of 52% of your resources, of the women in this country?"

Gillibrand added, "If you paid women a dollar on a dollar, you could raise the U.S. GDP by up to 9%. That is an economic engine."

Excerpts from the interview are below.

NORAH O'DONNELL: So, Senator, it is interesting to mark that it's been 50 years since the Equal Pay Act. Why does it need to be updated?

SEN. KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND: Many of us in the Senate, Sen. Mikulski leading the charge, believe that this is an economic issue. It's not only about women, but about the middle class. If you're not paying a woman the same as a man, you're not tapping into the potential of our economy. And why wouldn't you tap the full potential of 52% of your resources, of the women in this country? If you paid women a dollar on a dollar, you could raise the U.S. GDP by up to 9%. That is an economic engine.
